My work is about mixed culture, especially focused on identity and language. I have taken portraits of children whose fathers or mothers are Japanese. The portraits capture the moment when they start to speak to us in our language. They deal with at least two languages, which are Japanese, English, and possibly another language, depending on their parent’s nationality. Opening their mouths is the point in time, when we begin to learn about someone’s personality from the inside. These children come from everywhere. They are living in England and making it their home. The different kind of identities inherited from their parents are then mixing and developing in their own agencies, to create new identities.
